Christmas in lights

By Courtnee Turner Hoyle:

Many families and individuals enjoy light shows around the holidays. In my area, one seasonal display stands out, the Pinnacle Speedway in Lights.

Every year, the Bristol Motor Speedway hosts a holiday light display, powered by the Tennessee Valley Authority. Three million lights flash across a four-mile area, creating a wonder for children and adults.

I’ve driven through the speedway many times, and I’ve enjoyed the glowing dinosaurs, candles, racecars, and other characters as wintery music drifted through the vehicle. Even with a line of cars in front of and behind me, it was a peaceful experience, as the noise in my van was all I could hear.

It was an exhilarating experience when I drove on the NASCAR track, even at fifteen miles per hour. The gentle dip of the track pulls the vehicle to the side, as if you’re on a high motion spinning ride, and the person beside you is pushing into your side from the force.

A winter village is positioned in the center of the track. Until Christmas Eve, children may visit Santa Claus, but a carousel and marshmallow roasting is available for entirety of the event, too. In addition, the proceeds from the admission fees go to the Speedway Children’s Charities, so you can feel even better about the evening you spend among the twinkling lights.

You may not live in Northeast Tennessee or Southwest Virginia, but if you’re in the area, it’s a display that’s worth your attention. Just don’t try to drive too fast on the track!
